Effectiveness of a structured teaching programme on knowledge regarding risk factor and prevention of suicidal behavior among adolescents in a selected college at Bengaluru

A new study conducted at a selected college in Bengaluru has highlighted the significant impact of a Structured Teaching Programme (STP) aimed at improving adolescents’ knowledge of suicide risk factors and preventive measures.

With rising concerns about mental health issues among young people, particularly college students facing academic pressure and emotional challenges, the study sought to determine whether a focused educational intervention could enhance awareness and support early prevention.

The programme included expert-led sessions, interactive discussions, case scenarios, and informational materials covering key topics such as warning signs of suicidal behavior, common risk factors, coping strategies, support systems, and how to seek professional help.

Researchers assessed students’ knowledge before and after the teaching programme. The findings revealed a marked improvement in understanding various aspects of suicidal behavior and the importance of early intervention. Students showed increased awareness of mental health resources, crisis response steps, and the role of peer support.

Faculty members noted that the programme not only educated students but also encouraged open conversations about mental health, which is often considered a sensitive or stigmatized topic. Many participants expressed that the sessions helped them feel more equipped to handle emotional challenges and support peers who may be at risk.

The study emphasizes that structured, evidence-based educational initiatives in colleges can serve as a critical tool in suicide prevention. Researchers recommend implementing similar programmes across educational institutions in Bengaluru and beyond to strengthen mental health awareness and safeguard the well-being of adolescents.

The results of the study are expected to contribute to future mental health education policies and campus-based support systems.
